I understand that you have been in touch with Stephanie Williams, Animal Welfare Officer regarding changing the status of Bedford Square to become dog friendly.
Bedford Square has historically been a dog exclusion area, and when the city created dog control orders that replaced the dog bylaws in January 2009, the historic exclusion status of the square was maintained.
The new dog scheme was resolved by full Council, following an open, public Cabinet Members Meeting and Cabinet route for decision making.
During the consultation process in 2007 and 2008, there was intense media and citizen interest, including petitions. There were two consultations, with the second one dealing with the recommendations and outcomes of the first one.
Open letter to Council and the local councillors
Hello,
We are looking into the possiblility of overturning the council by law banning dogs from entering Bedford Square. as defined http://www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/index.c … t=c1195746
It may appear we hate dogs.
Far from it. We are taking the council to task over a point that when we asked for dog bins to assist in reminding the fogetful few to clean up after themselves, they told us that dog bins would not be installed as dogs were not allowed.
After asking for a change in the rules, which they refused, we asked them to come along and advise people of the the fact and offer an alternative.
At least we dont follow people home and shove dog poo through their doors like a certain other square does!
Register your request for a change in the council law so that residents of Bedford Sqaure can responsibly walk their dogs in the square
This email was received to day with some strange comments.
Have you got any?
Do you know who and what caused this situation in the first place?
Dear Mr Mandeville
Further to your email
relating to Dogs in
I have visited the Square during the lunchtime period as suggested and witnessed two local residents bringing their dogs into the square, following a review of the interviews and circumstances both residents were issued with warning letters, informing them of the fixed penalty system and the concerns other local residents.
This is the content of an open letter to the Dog Wardens, the neighbourhood policing team and copied to the local councillors for action
Hello,
As you have seen the evidence and on speaking to some of the regular dog walkers, We are formally requesting that a lengthy visit is made to Bedford Square for the following reasons
under the following page http://www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/index.cfm?request=c1195746
* To asses the state and clarify of the No Dogs signage on each of the gates.
* To uphold the "no dogs allowed" rule as indicated.
* Where required to enforce the action.
We have previously provided details of time that dogs are visiting and the story of "I am just visiting the area" does not hold water.
