It may appear we hate dogs.
Far from it. We are taking the council to task over a point that when we asked for dog bins to assist in reminding the fogetful few to clean up after themselves, they told us that dog bins would not be installed as dogs were not allowed.
After asking for a change in the rules, which they refused, we asked them to come along and advise people of the the fact and offer an alternative.
At least we dont follow people home and shove dog poo through their doors like a certain other square does!
Register your request for a change in the council law so that residents of Bedford Sqaure can responsibly walk their dogs in the square
Some dog owners are responsible but others are not. Some dog owners look the other way when their dog goes to the toilet. I don’t believe these individuals would use a bin if it were provided.
If we are the only square, which allows dogs, then we will have all the dogs in the area coming for runs in the square. As the numbers of dogs increase grass and shrubs will be damaged and barking will be more common.
In addition it’s not simply a case of dogs going to the toilet. There was also the case of a kid being killed this week by an aggressive dog.
That makes 3 dog owners and one non dog owner so far, if there is not problem we will send another email to the dog warden and ask her to look at making the square one of the dog friendly places. if the cuncil website was working i could give you there "please everyone and no one policy" with their 'The Dogs Exclusion (Brighton and Hove) Order 2009'. which list Bedford Square. As mentioned previously, we asked for a dog bin, they said "no dogs so no bin" unless someone makes a fuss and says, dogs are using the square, we want a bin, they wont take notice.

You need JavaScript enabled to view itI take my small clean dog for a short evening walk in the square just prior to bedtime, I can't see what harm this does. Non dog owners don't use the square at this time, and particulary during the Winter there is nowhere else unless to go you want to get blown away with the howling gales at the seafront, and particulary when it's raining. There is no excuse for owners not cleaning up after their dogs and no excuse for badly behaved dogs who are let off their leads, but as with everything in society it can't be the well-behaved majority that have to suffer for the small amount of anti-social owners (they know who they are). You have to clean up after your dog and you have to keep your dog under control, this applies to all public spaces not just Bedford Square. I'm sure if the Square was made a dog friendly place then the responsible dog owners would take to task the irresponsible owners as happens elsewhere, by it not being dog friendly this somewhat ties our hands, and the rest of us who 'shouldn't' can't really comment, or report, when something anti-social happens. We dog owners dislike this behaviour too.
